As a self published author, I’m very conscious that getting the word out there about my book is all down to me. I am solely responsible for getting media mentions and press coverage for my own book and unless you have a marketing budget to pay a PR firm, you are too. I would argue that many traditionally published authors are in the same boat as once the initial two week flurry around publication is over, most authors are on their own regarding securing publicity about their books.

If you have self published and decided to print your book, your first hurdle is getting enough sales to persuade bookshops to stock your book. I’ve heard that wholesalers like to see a minimum of 250 purchases before they will stock it. I secured 750 sales via my website and three interviews on national radio before Christmas which meant that the wholesaler for independent bookshops here in Ireland was happy to stock it.

Now that the books could be ordered from bookshops, I wanted to get more press coverage. People tend to buy books on impulse when they see them in front of them so I needed people to order the books so that the bookshops would order in more and stock them on their shelves. However, even though I tried a few different angles, it was proving difficult to achieve much print coverage – I needed a different angle so I took a break for a while.

As I have a couple of events coming up where I will be selling and signing the books, I tackled the press releases again. I’m hoping for local media coverage (radio and print) around both events and I’m delighted to say that I’m being interviewed on national television (TV3 Ireland AM) next Monday morning.

How To Get Press Coverage For Your Book

1. Reviews – It can be difficult to get reviews of your self published book in newspapers and literary supplements so arrange a book blog tour and ask bloggers to review your book. Journalists may come across them and the online coverage will help sales too.

2. Send Press Releases – It is important that you know as many journalists as possible that you are emailing or that you have a direct email address if possible. This is much more effective than sending one to the standard email address. How do you get these contacts? In Ireland, there is the a media book available for purchase in which the email address for every journalist are renewed each year.

I would also recommend collaborating with other writers and exchanging email addresses of journalists. If you see a writer you know being featured on television or radio, it could be worthwhile to contact them asking how they managed it.

3. Send Copies – You are going to have to build the cost of extra copies plus the postage into your marketing. However, do not send copies of your book to all and sundry. If you hear a radio presenter discussing a topic that is close to the theme of your book, send them a copy with a letter. The timing has to be right for them and if the book is topical in some way, it stands a much higher chance of being featured. I sent a copy to this television channel before Christmas too but the timing was wrong for them plus I didn’t have a named researcher to send it to then – I sent them a copy yesterday and received the request for the interview today.

4. Follow Journalists – Follow all relevant journalists and book reviewers on twitter, engage with them using relevant content and you never know when they just might pick up on the title of your book.

5. Keep Blogging – I read recently that blogging regularly can be more effective than a television interview – it keeps your book in the mind of your readers and any journalists that may happen upon your blog.

6. Write Articles For Papers – This is one method that I intend to try – writing articles for various publications based on extracts of my novel. I have already written for a Irish Canadian publication and they have invited me to submit two pieces for their next publication. Some of them may pay you for your pieces, some will not. However, by writing for different publications you are continually reaching different audiences and growing your exposure.

Have you achieved press coverage for your book? I’d love to hear your story of how you achieved it.

Two little mice, an idea, expert knowledge about marketing and that was all Bernie Tracey needed to create her book The Cheese Mall: Key Marketing Skills for the Budding Entrepreneur. Bernie Tracey has many years experience training SMEs and corporate businesses in business management and marketing.

This post is the sixth post of six in a virtual book tour and each blogger has expressed their surprise and amazement regarding Bernie’s ability to take what is quite a complicated concept and make it appear easy in a step-by-step approach as two mice named Millie and Matthew write their own business plan. As stated by Fergal Quinn, this book demystifies marketing and business jargon.

Bernie had the idea to continue the story of Millie and Matthew’s venture in a blog along with a facebook page and a twitter account. Not only would the social media platforms serve to publicise the book, they would also share more marketing and business tips with the readers as the mice complete their first year in business experiencing many realistic ups and downs. As one reviewer once wrote, one could be forgiven for thinking the mice are real and that’s the beauty of it – suspend your disbelief just as you do when watching cartoons or an animated movie and enjoy their story, their experiences and I think many business people with empathise with them too. Millie is usually the one who blogs and who engages on social media and she readily shares her anxieties about public speaking, business weaknesses and time management with the readers as well as celebrating other young entrepreneurs and their achievements. Do pour yourself a cup of tea and head over to read their blog (after you have entered the competition below!)

Bernie is planning more books in the Cheese Mall series so we will be able to enjoy the adventures of Millie and Matthew for some time yet. I can see them being featured in their own little television series sometime if a producer comes across them!

We are hosting a competition for a copy of The Cheese Mall: Key Marketing Skills for the Budding Entrepreneur – an essential tool for start up businesses and also essential for those in business for some time as each time you dip into it, it will remind you of something both useful and crucial!

To enter the competition, just leave a comment on this blog post telling us a little about your writing of a business plan. Did you write one? Did you ever revisit it? Is it abandoned or is it a happily dog-eared and much scribbled on and re-written document? The winner will be drawn at random next Monday.

Bernie Tracey of Beacon Coaching has published a book (with a difference) about setting up and marketing a new business. The ‘difference’ is that it centres around two mouse cartoon characters who are setting up their first business. Endorsed by Fergal Quinn, this book will be very useful for anyone starting up a business or in the early years ( or as a refresher for later years!). I recently caught up with Bernie to ask her all about her new book and she has offered us two copies of ‘The Cheese Mall’ to give way – all you have to do is leave a comment before 7th November.

Bernie, you worked in various roles within companies and set up Beacon Coaching in 2005, spending your time now sharing your expertise with SMEs. Could you tell us firstly what kind of courses do you run and what do you offer the business owners who come to you for mentoring?

I run Marketing and Sales programmes for Enterprise Boards and SME organisations. I take a practical approach to my training and the content is reflected on my business management experience and of course, my own experience of setting up and running my own business. Participants are often amazed about how upfront and honest I am about the mistakes I made in my first year of business and they find this very refreshing. With regard to mentoring, I help companies take a realistic look at their business and evaluate what is not working for them. I can see what a company needs to do in order to be successful and I work with them to help them fine tune their business development strategy.

Why did you decide to write ‘The Cheese Mall’? What lessons will people learn from it?

There are many great books out there on Marketing but they do not really communicate with the small business in any meaningful way. When you are starting off in business there are so many anxieties that can become overwhelming when establishing your business. I wanted to write The Cheese Mall in a more conversational way so that the small business owner could very quickly understand what marketing is really all about. I also wanted to demystify all the jargon.

I like your use of cartoon characters, Millie and Matthew. What do they bring to a book about marketing?

I did not want to write yet another marketing book so this is why I introduced Millie and Matthew. They create their own Marketing Communications Strategy and are trying to get to grips with jargon such as market segmentation, SWOT and marketing mix. Having them talk to each and explain these terms in an easy way and then showing how it relates to their business, will help the new start-up to really understand complex concepts. In other words they are asking the questions that business person would want to ask an author if you were reading a book but they cannot answer you directly. However, in The Cheese Mall, your questions are now being answered by both Millie and Matthew.

I see you are have created a blog for the characters of ‘The Cheese Mall’. What benefits do you think that brings – both to you in terms of publicising the book and to the readers of the blog?

In the book Millie and Matthew discuss their Internet Marketing strategy and of course their wordpress blog comes up as a customer engagement tool. I wanted to use the blog to continue with the journey. Getting your business plan approved by the bank is one thing but then opening the business and having to do all the things that you said you were going to do is another. Like all businesses there will be ups and downs in the first year so I wanted to use the blog to continue the story and also to create an affinity with the characters. They are also on Twitter and Facebook.

I see The Cheese Mall is available to purchase on kindle, do you think your messages and lessons within the book would apply to an international audience of SMEs?

Absolutely. The marketing principles explored in this book are universal.

Fergal Quinn has a high opinion of your book, do you think experienced business people can learn from it too?

The Cheese Mall is targeted at both start-ups and entrepreneurs already in business as it will help a business take a fresh look at their marketing communications. It will also help them understand that they need to put their customer at the centre of all their business decisions. This is how Feargal Quinn built the SuperQuinn brand and I guess this is why he has endorsed the book because this is the core message of The Cheese Mall.

What has been the response so far to The Cheese Mall?

Those who have read the book have commented on its simplicity and how it is so readable. It will take less than one hour out of your busy day to read this book but it will change your views and understanding about marketing forever.

I understand you are Self-Publishing. How difficult is that?

I know a lot about marketing but not much about publishing but I am getting there. I am marketing the book myself. I am in essence ‘walking the talk’ Lorna because all the advice I am giving in the book I am applying to the marketing of The Cheese Mall. I also had to do all the type-setting myself and organise the printing. It has been a tremendous learning curve for me and has increased my resolve to get this little book out there. I sincerely believe that The Cheese Mall’s simple approach to marketing will help ease the anxiety that every new start-up feels when beginning their entrepreneurial journey and it will also help a company that is going through tough times to apply some key marketing principles in their business.

The Cheese Mall can be purchased online here and remember to leave a comment below before 7th November if you would like a chance of winning this new book on marketing your business.

Update: The winners are Brian of The Secret Garden and Kate McQuillan, their copies will be sent to them shortly. Many thanks to everyone who entered.
